Weekend road closure planned as important track work takes place at Rutherford GO Station

A road closure is the latest step as improvement work continues at Rutherford GO Station this week. When completed, the station will have a new parking structure with 1,200 net new spaces, a new railway bridge, plus better pedestrian and cycling connections.

Your vehicle’s GPS may have a few choice, new words for the detours Metrolinx is about to ask it – and you – to contend with.

But the weekend road closures are needed to get Rutherford GO Station where it needs to be.

Starting this Friday night (Jan. 17), Rutherford Road will be closed between Westburne Drive and Peter Rupert Avenue, as track work will be happening at the transit station. The road will reopen on Sunday morning (Jan. 19) at 7 a.m.

To help, we’ve broken down some of the changes below. And while we can’t take the annoyance out of the closure, crews will be working overnight to get the work done as quickly as possible.

  • Traffic heading east on Rutherford Road will need to detour north or south onto Keele Street.
  • Traffic heading west on Rutherford Road will need to detour north or south onto Dufferin Street.

The main reason for this work is to start separating the tracks from the road and build what’s known as a grade separation. Our contractors will be lowering Rutherford Road under the rail corridor.

When the grade separation is done, traffic will no longer have to wait for a train to pass – a major traffic and safety improvement.

Metrolinx knows this kind of work can make your commute more challenging, but the construction will be worth it in the end. Once the station improvements are completed in 2022, Rutherford GO Station will make taking transit in Vaughan easier than ever because:

  • The new parking structure featuring 1,200 more spaces
  • A new railway bridge over Rutherford Road will enhance safety and enable two-way, all-day GO service in the future
  • Bike lanes and a pedestrian bridge over the road will provide convenient new ways to reach the station
  • 100 new bike parking spots will be added
  • An upgraded bus loop will make for more seamless connections to York Region Transit and the Kiss & Ride
  • The station building will be much improved
