A good sign as Cooksville GO gets its name up in lights – See the video here

The new Cooksville GO Station gets a bit of important branding. But putting up the official sign is no small feat.

What’s in a name?

If it’s hoisted up on the entrance to a major GO station, it becomes an iconic symbol of countless journeys, as well as a point of pride for locals.

Recently, a 383 kg sign was lifted and put in place on the south side of the rooftop of the new Cooksville GO Station building. It overlooks the public plaza, another new station amenity for customers.

Crews work to raise the GO sign.

The LED illuminated sign is partly made of black perforated vinyl to allow the glow of light to shine through.

Metrolinx is transforming Cooksville GO Station, making it easier for customers to access the facility.

Cooksville GO will become a key transit hub in Peel region connecting customers to GO Transit (rail and bus service), Mississauga transit and the future Hurontario LRT.

The station building partially opened to the public in October 2019 and upon completion, it will connect to the new parking structure. The building – as well as the entire Cooksville station – will be certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver and also includes an additional underground tunnel that will allow customers to easily access the rail platform on the other side of the tracks. LEED is a green building certification program used worldwide and Silver is one of four levels of certification.

The new GO sign was installed in three pieces – one backing piece and two sign arms to hug and keep the Cooksville letters in place.

A crew of six lifted the sign, each with a specific role to play.

Two hoisted the sign up using the boom truck, two were positioned in the crane basket on the bucket truck to guide it upward, one was tied off on the roof to guide the sign placement, and one stayed on ground as a spotter.

The installation took approximately five hours.
