Metrolinx gives away firewood as part of vegetation management program

More than 350 people from the local community came out to a recent firewood giveaway event in Whitchurch-Stouffville. Check out photos from the event and find out just how much wood was given away.

The price was right for Stouffville residents.

As part of Metrolinx’s vegetation management program, the transit agency, and its contractor GRASCAN recently gave away free firewood to members of the York Region community.

Metrolinx is in the middle of a large-scale expansion of GO Transit service across the region, and part of that work involves removing trees in order to expand transit. The wood is then given away, otherwise it would end up in a landfill.

The firewood giveaway took place on Oct. 16 at the Lincolnville GO train layover facility near the new Old Elm GO Station. (Metrolinx photo)

More than 350 people loaded up their cars at the event, which ended up seeing 30 cords of wood given away. That’s enough to fill 1.5 standard shipping containers.
